The Dental Estimates Board was created on 24th March 1948. Its purpose was to approve courses of dental treatment submitted by dentists for payment by the NHS. Early calculations estimated that the Board would receive between 13,000 - 14,000 estimate forms a day but the huge demand for dental treatment meant that by the 1950s, the Board were processing about 30,000 forms a day. By the 1950s there were 900 clerks processing the forms with eight dentists acting as advisors. In 1989 the Board was renamed the Dental Practice Board.
